The Artistic Research PhD Programme is a postgraduate study programme in the field of art, located at the Zentrum Fokus Forschung. The programme focuses on artistic work, which is regarded as the basis of knowledge production. It is governed by topics and practices of artistic research. Criteria for the acceptance of candidates are the potential for innovation and possible social relevance of the artistic research proposal and the knowledge of the national and international research context.

The Zentrum Fokus Forschung is a unit at the University of Applied Arts Vienna at which — complementary to existing departments at the Angewandte — independent artistic research is generated and connected. Artistic work is regarded as the basis of knowledge production, of course in a productive relation towards existing ways of knowledge development as they have been established in other fields of research.
