A continuous overview of publications of artistic research endeavours in the context of the University of Applied Arts Vienna:

Drawing a Hypothesis is an exciting reader on the ontology of forms of visualisation and on the development of the diagrammatic perspective and its use in contemporary art, science and theory. In an intense process of exchange with artists and scientists, Nikolaus Gansterer reveals drawing figures as a media of research which enables the emergence of new narratives and ideas by tracing the speculative potential of diagrams. Based on a discursive analysis of found figures with the artist’s own diagrammatic maps and models, the invited authors create unique correlations between thinking and drawing. The book is a rich compendium of figures of thought, which moves from scientific representation through artistic interpretation and vice versa.

“Drawing a Hypothesis – Figures of Thought” was published by Springer Verlag Wien/NewYork in the series: Edition Angewandte, 1st Edition, 2011; 2nd corrected edition, 2017, De Gruyter Berlin/Boston. ISBN 978-3-11-054661-3

Choreo-graphic Figures: Deviations from the Line stages a beyond-disciplinary, inter-subjective encounter between the lines of choreography, drawing and writing, for exploring those forms of thinking-feeling-knowing produced through collaborative exchange, in the slippage and deviation as different modes of practice enter into dialogue, overlap, collide. The publication is conceived as a studio-laboratory in itself, drawing together critical reflections and experimental practices that focus on the how-ness — the qualitative-processual, aesthetic-epistemological and ethico-empathetic dynamics — within shared artistic exploration, directing attention to an affective realm of forces and intensities existing before, between and beneath the more readable gestures of artistic practice.

"Choreo-graphic Figures: Deviations from the Line" was published by De Gruyter, Berlin/Boston, in the series: Edition Angewandte, 1st edition, 2017. ISBN 978-3-11-054660-6

It has always been the case that the teaching of art has had to deal with social changes. We are currently facing historic challenges and phenomena which we could never have imagined - the global financial crisis, the massive migration flows, and the ubiquitous spread of new technologies in our everyday life. Creative competence is needed for overcoming the disciplinary boundaries and in order to make equal opportunities for education possible in a diverse society.
This publication takes a critical look at the role of art and design education amidst these social changes - using theoretical reflection, practical experience, and empirical analysis.

The word 'fluid' describes a phenomenon as well as a material property. Of special interest is how aspects of fluidity influence the active and direct handling of materials and how its special characteristics are expressed in experimental practices and thinking patterns.
The motivation for focusing on fluidity as a prerequisite for 'becoming' and the nature of processes originated from the art-based 'Liquid Things' research project. As this subject covers a very wide spectrum, the approach was modified to allow the participation of several disciplines; the book draws on the philosophy of science, hydrodynamics, and the cultural sciences, and focuses on the role of fluidity in cognitive and experience processes with the aim of establishing a grammar of 'movable' materials.

This is the first comprehensive survey of the works of the Austrian artist Roland Reiter. Reiter’s art is never coolly calculated, but instead, is characterized by its emotionally "expressive" moment. He mixes materials that are not classically compatible, but in the context of contemporary art technique, become mutually enhancing. This creates a kind of tension that promotes a sense of self voyeurism.

Never to be able to see through the eyes of another, never to feel what another one feels, since every emotion that we can create necessarily remains our very own - this dilemma is the starting point of Wagner's explorations and is examined throughout Poietry. In desperate need of connection to transcend our fundamental solitude our disposition is standing in the way of this endeavour, rendering its success indeed improbable. By appropriating different theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches, Wagner's work investigates how art as a medium may qualify to challenge the improbability of connection through communication. It scratches at the boundaries that constitute our walls, even if they can't be brought to fall and with these experimental explorations proposes a different way of thinking through the possibilities and impossibilities of connecting.

Hanakam & Schuller are tricksters. As artists and researchers, they remodel the rules of fine art, creating idiosyncratic orders and new world designs incorporated in videos and objects. The artefacts of the two artists from Vienna are "Gestalt-changers"; they change their outer shape and re-appear in a number of different contexts.
The trickster art book illustrates the oeuvre and provides an insight into its making using multi-page photo spreads from video stills, and production photographs. The Arkadikon essay captures readers and leads them to contemporary hypothetical landscapes, deconstructing them as modern surrogates of an increasingly virtual world.
The artists discuss ideal, pop, aura and abduction with Angela Stief, Anselm Franke, Uta Grosenick, Annette Hünnekens, Wolfgang Ullrich, Lois Weinberger, Stephanie Weber und Oliver Zybok.

Teaching and learning of art in higher education (at university level) has experienced significant and challenging cultural, technological, societal and economic changes. The Perspectives on Art Education Symposium will address these changes; explore their antecedent approaches and search for meaningful explainations and responses, as they are relevant for teaching and learning studio art and art education today.
The symposium discusses and explores critically the various perspectives of the artist in current society, the necessity for new strategies of teaching and learning and the diversity of art education across different nations and art schools.
The discussion focuses on the one overarching question:
How do we define perspectives on art education and transfer these to other cultural contexts? How will we change our perspectives in reference to shifting trends in youth culture and diverse expectations in society in order to educate artists, designers and architects for purposes of actualizing the imaginative, socially responsible and respect-guided meaningful art practice, the interdisciplinary collaboration and intellectual exchange?

Fluid Totality presents the avant-garde architectural visions of one of the most innovative academic institutions of our time―Studio Hadid at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The studio founded by Zaha Hadid 15 years ago has meanwhile developed into a globally renowned think tank.
The book analyzes these developments in the context of a comprehensive process of digitization and the resulting global changes in our habitats. On the basis of theoretical and analytical essays by influential contemporary architectural theorists and critics, as well as numerous articles and statements by renowned architects and others who have been involved during the history of the studio, this volume presents the result of fifteen years of pioneering work in an international context; the particular focus being the projects of the last five years.

Organized by the department for Graphics & Printmaking at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the exhibition Thought Machines includes student work from Vienna as well as from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Budapest; the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava; the Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig and the Royal College of Art, London. All participants in the exhibition share a platform in being students of printmaking. From this point of departure they develop projects which inhabit the whole range of contemporary art-making possibilities. What binds these projects together is that they all address the concept of Thought Machines which is discussed by Jan Svenungsson in an introductory text.

What is the architect doing in the jungle? How can architects and natural scientists immerge into a fruitful dialogue to generate new insights for cross-disciplinary innovation? The book contributes to the current discussion of arts-based research taking the example of the interdisciplinary research project BiornaMetics - architecture defined By natural Patterns. Biornametics is an emerging contemporary design practice that explores a new methodology to interconnect scientific evidence with creative design in the field of architecture. The word biornametics is generated from "ornament", referring to the famous Austrian architect adolf loos, and "biomimetics". it is concerned with the detection of the principles behind processes of emerging and dissolving patterns in animate and inanimate nature. reflections on the architectural direction of Biornametics, issues of arts and science collaboration, and the application of the methodology show a diverse world of thoughts and approaches to the theme.

Irony, corrections, transformation and densification define the approach Roman Pfeffer takes when working on everyday objects and the fine arts. His work does not remain beholden to one medium in doing so. Instead, it playfully moves between individual disciplines, such as sculpture, painting and graphic design, but also photography and video, as well as applied art. The artist appropriates the world of the arts and the everyday, operates as a natural scientist and creates mathematical formulas, yet does so without following rational laws. Cosima Rainer and Christian Höller each dedicate an essay to the conceptual approach of Roman Pfeffer.

In today’s situation visual artists always have to be prepared to express themselves in words. Words spoken and words written down. It is deeply fascinating but not easy, to try to find ways to translate or reproduce thoughts – which have been produced in the form of images – into words and verbal language.

Vladimir Tatlin's (1885-1953) world famous monument design for the III International dating back to 1919 is considered an icon of Russian constructivism. All the demands made of revolutionary design as employed by Soviet cultural propaganda were taken to an extreme in this Utopian design. Tatlin's monument was designed to be 400 meters tall, making it one hundred meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. It stood for the belief in a new architecture with its playful ignorance of constructive logic. But could Tatlin's monument be built today, could it have been built in 1920? Students at the Institute of Architecture of the Vienna University of Applied Arts carefully explored the constructive circumstances before they finally subjected the monument itself to a close examination. Model photos taken in 1920 were three dimensionally reconstructed with the help of the University's geometry department. The answers to the key questions won't be revealed here, but: they were found and are shown in the book in an engaging and exciting manner.

Sealed in the book/envelope are a variety of thoughts, images, considerations, and theoretical references about the immediate and broader context of establishing an Art & Science class at the University of Applied Arts of Vienna. Two main sources of material are combined: first, contributions that document the development of the department; and second, contributions by invited guests and interesting positions that refer to a wider art/science field. The compiled materials reflect upon experimental investigations into the reality of production of systems, discourses, and institutional structures. The book contributes to the questions of how artistic and scientific methods and practices relate to each other, and how these relations can be enriched and transformed.
